HOUSTON - May 4, 2006 --- CITGO Petroleum Corporation refineries were recognized today by the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) for their safe operations. The awards were presented at the Safety Awards Banquet held as part of NPRA’s National Safety Conference in Austin, Texas. Now in its 24th year, the NPRA Safety Statistics and Awards Program is part of a comprehensive safety program developed by NPRA’s Fire and Accident Prevention Committee to promote accident prevention in the petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries as well as the contractors supporting them and to publicly recognize those facilities that for the previous year have achieved a high safety standard in their daily operations. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery was presented with two Safety Achievement Awards, a Gold Award and a Merit Award; the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex was presented with a Safety Achievement Award and a Merit Award; the Lemont Refinery was presented with two Safety Achievement Awards, a Gold Award and a Merit Award; the Paulsboro Refinery was presented with a Safety Achievement Award, a Gold Award and a Merit Award; and the Savannah Refinery was presented with a Safety Achievement Award, a Gold Award and a Merit Award. “The receipt of these awards is the result of our commitment to, and our employee’s participation in, safe and environmentally responsible operations,” said Rixio Medina, CITGO’s vice president of Health, Safety, Security, Assets and Environmental Protection. “We are proud that our facilities continue to be recognized for the accomplishments of our employees. We strive to perform safely every day.” The NPRA Safety Achievement Award (1,000,000+ Employee Hours) acknowledges facilities operating one million or more employee hours without an employee lost workday case involving days away from work and without a workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the evaluation period. CITGO’s Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex has achieved 1 million hours, the Corpus Christi Refinery 2 million hours and the Lemont Refinery 4 million hours. The NPRA Safety Achievement Award (1+ years) acknowledges facilities operating one or more years without an employee lost workday case involving days away from work and without a workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the evaluation period. CITGO’s Paulsboro Refinery has achieved five years, the Savannah Refinery has accomplished three years, the Lemont Refinery has achieved three years, and the Corpus Christi Refinery has achieved 1 year. The NPRA Award of Merit recognizes facilities with a total recordable incidence rate (TRIR) of 1.2 or less with no workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the calendar year. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery achieved a rate of 0.32 TRIR, the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex achieved a rate of 0.41 TRIR, the Lemont Refinery achieved a rate of 0.0 TRIR, the Paulsboro Refinery achieved a rate of 0.0 TRIR and the Savannah Refinery achieved a rate of 0.0 TRIR. The NPRA Gold Award recognizes facilities with a 25 percent or greater reduction in the total recordable incidence rate with no workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the calendar year, as compared to the total recordable incidence rates for the three previous calendar years. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery achieved a reduction of 78 percent, the Lemont Refinery achieved a reduction of 100 percent, the Paulsboro Refinery achieved a reduction of 100 percent, and the Savannah Refinery achieved a reduction of 100 percent.
